There can be no good outcome in the Terri Schiavo case. So, I'm not going to bother debating the merits of removing, or reconnecting the feeding tube. However, given that the charge to keep her alive is led by the likes of Bill Frist, Tom Delay and President Bush, I do find it ironic that Ms. Schiavo's life has been sustained for the past 14 or so years by Medicaid ( a program that Frist et al would like to cut), and her family's award in a medical malpractice lawsuit (where Bush is seeking severe limitation of settlements).
I had read a few of Zora Neale Hurston's short stories when I was just out of college. I liked her writing style, and I had lived many years in Central Floridia, where most of her work is set, so there was an added level of interest. On Sunday night, I stumbled across a made-for-TV version of "Their Eyes Were Watching God." And Halle Berry was in it!?
I settled on the couch and watched as Berry's character returned to Eatonville, Florida, filthy and shamed about something I didn't quite understand. Soon I was immersed in the character's flashbacks. I rarely watch a television program all the way through anymore, but this one had me hooked.
Then, about 45 minutes in the flick. ABC returned from a commercial break and there she was--thanking how proud she was to be bringing tonight's presentation. That ruined everything for me.
"You watch too much TV," I told myself. I turned the set off and opened a book.
I suppose as long as Martha and the Big O keep popping up on my television, I'll get a lot of reading done .
