Knock, Knock

Who's There?

Devin.

Devin Who?

Devinately time you got a doorbell.

This was the first joke that my wife has told this year, so I thought I'd share it.

First Strike

This morning, the news is dominated by reports that Iran has broken the seals on nuclear processing equipment. Much of the world is fearful that this equipment could be used to convert uranium into material for nuclear weapons. Duh.

Pakistan has a bomb, India has a bomb. And I have no facts to back this up, but I've reached the conclusion that Saudi Arabia has a bomb. Their allocations for defense spending are greater than any other country in the region with the exception of Israel (who has a bomb); Pakistan showed it's willingness to provide a bomb for any government with a checkbook.

The fact is that Iran will have a bomb soon, if they don't already.

I don't have a solution, to the conflict with Iran, but I do have a starting point that may help mitigate the risk of a nuclear showdown. While have no love for Iran's current leadership or any of its predecessors, I feel Iran should be allowed to try Saddam, in their own country's court of law, for war crimes and other crimes against humanity.

In the build-up to the Iraq War, President Bush was always quick to mention that Saddam used chemical weapons. against his "neighbors." As if Iran were as affable as Barney and Betty Rubble. But in discussing the pending war crimes and other crimes against humanity charges pending against Saddam, there has been no mention of legal recourse for the country who suffered most at Saddam's hands.

Letting Iran try Saddam won't make us friends with Iran, but it may help us all to keep our missiles in our silos for just a little while longer. Man up, George, show us that you're bigger a bigger man than the Ayatollahs. We don't have to like those theocratic-bastard leaders--we don't even have to talk to them--but we do have to live on the same planet.
