Dumbass Appliances

Many news sites published a story about the risk of self-replicating AI worms invading home appliances (from the Guardian: “AI in your oven? Anthropic warns models ‘months away’ from self-replication on smart devices.”)

Oh, ffs! Sorry for the offensive acronym, but I’m on the verge of passing out due to oxygen deprivation, because I’ve been sighing heavily for 20+ years since I first read about “smart” appliances that would be (and now are) connected to the internet.

It wasn’t long before a shit-ton of customer data was stolen when hackers breached corporate networks, via “smart” light switches…where the default password was…..”Password.”

If only it were possible to build ovens, refrigerators, dishwashers, doorbells—that cool, clean, alert, respectively—without a network connections.

I look forward to a future where “dumbass” appliances are the norm.
